In Progress- Reversible Vintage Style Bathing Suit

I have been working on this suit slowly but surely for the last couple weeks. It uses the bottoms from McCall's 8331, which I was delighted to find fit me rather well straight from the pattern. I tightened up the leg holes a little and made a few other tweaks to make them more beach appropriate, but the chances are good that I'll be sewing a few pair straight from the pattern just to wear as shorts.

Both the top and the bottom have a blue side and a striped side- I only flipped the top for these photos because getting the bottoms on the dressform was a pain.

I still need to attach straps, hem the shorts, and sew in the closures, but it's coming along! I am a slow seamstress anyway, so throw in a holiday, some family fun, and a trip to the Biltmore, and I'm just moseying along.... no rush, just when we thought it was already summer we'll be having lows in the thirties for the next few days! Brrrrrrrr!

  1. So cute! I always love stripes, and yours line up great! And our weather here in WI did the same thing...80 degrees and now back down to 40. :(

    1. Thanks! I was a little lazy on the matching, but the stripes turned out ok anyway.
For someone who claims to love the cold, I was enjoying that early summer type weather! It'll be back with a vengeance soon enough though.

  2. Gorgeous!! Can't wait to see it finished. Is it warm there yet? Drizzly, chilly and grey here in the uk, hmmmph!

    1. Thanks Portia! It had been very warm and sunny for the last couple of weeks, but it got chilly at Easter. Went to the Biltmore to see the gardens on Tuesday, and they were covering all the plants toward the end of the day to protect them from potential frost. Hope it warms up for you soon!

  3. My only decent bathing suit now has a big splotch of blue paint across the butt (thanks for not putting up that Wet Paint sign, town pool!), so I've been thinking about making a vintage suit. I may use this pattern because it looks like one my grandmother wore in a photo I have from 1947!

  4. That's cute! Would you make the one piece or two piece?
I think it would be very neat to have a similar suit to one your grandma wore...I'd love to see the photo!
I should have mentioned again that I did make the top using a 40s bra pattern from the same shop

I received the pdf very quickly, and I thought it was nicely done. I would definitely buy from her again.

    1. Thanks Gina! Now I just need to finish it! Am I the only one who stalls out EVERY TIME I am almost finished with something?
