Mixed Emotions....


So, I am currently sewing a back wrap dress, Simplicity 6341 © 1974. The fabric is a vintage bed sheet. My dilemma is with the patch pocket on it- the huge, very '70s patch pocket. Half of me says it's awful and obtrusive, and the other half says that is part of the authentic '70s charm. These are the things I ponder late at night. I have a soft spot for the period details, but I also want to want to wear it, and as a friend commented, the pocket makes it look like an apron. But that is kinda how the Swirl style was, right? (See Lizzie Bramlett's article on the Swirl dress here, complete with photos of enormous pockets) A big, embellished dress/apron? A drapron? Another friend said it would look better without the trim as placed, and I think that might be part of the problem too. Although, I was thinking about just putting in some more useful side seam pockets. Any thoughts?

    I love 70s patterns, and using up bedding for dressmaking, oh the yoys!! Your dress looks wonderful pocket too! This has really inspired me to delve back into my stash.

    Personally I love the pocket--I think it is quite charming. However if you think that it will deter you from wearing your cute dress than by all means, off with the pocket! Side seam pockets would look great too. BTW, I love the keyhole neckline. :D

    Uh, just to be the dissenting vote, but I think the pocket does look "aprony". But a blue belt or waist ties with blue piping would bring that punch of blue back to the bodice. Very nice.

    The beauty of sewing your clothes yourself is that you can make it EXACTLY as you want it. Have it your way.

    Authentic is fine, or pocket without the trim to blend in more.

    Personally, I love the idea of stealth side seam pockets for utility and a streamlined look.

    It is a gorgeous dress. I bet it will be lots of fun to wear.

    I also love the keyhole neckline, but to the pocket...I own Swirls with both side seam and patch pockets so either would be authentic. The edging on it does break up the flow of the floral pattern and distracts a little. I say take off the edging and re-apply.

    I totally love the pocket. It's what you want in a 'Swirl' style wrap dress--a utility pocket! Many of them have applique designs, so you could go over the top with a cute iron on silhouette cut from the deep blue fabric.
    p.s. the 2nd dress in Lizzie's article was mine--and I thinks it looks alot like yours.

    Thanks so much for all of the ideas! I am just about done with this dress, but I have been very lazy about getting to the hem. I made another pocket minus the blue edge, and I think it'll keep that 70s patch pocket look without distracting too much. I'll get some pics up as soon as I can! Thanks again!

    I don't mind it as is.
    If I look at the pattern envelope picture I think "'70s" but if I just look at the finished product, I don't get that feel at all.

    I like the pocket and since you removed the trim it probably blends in nicely. But I like the trim too!
